Chip Borkenhagen
Owner & Artist

My path as an artist is mostly self-taught and a lifelong work in progress.

Paintings

It’s been asked of me, “Why do you have so many different styles of painting?” A fair question, since many (most?) painters settle into a style that makes their work recognizable. It’s possible that this could be an eventuality for me, but for now, I am sticking to style exploration because it fuels my creativity and energizes me.

I will always continue to paint for me—for what gives me joy, and keeps me engaged. When others enjoy my work (and purchase it), so much the better. Then it becomes a true win-win. Because my paintings become like offspring, it is always satisfying to know they find good homes.

Photography

Much of my photo background consists of commercial shooting of one kind or another. But the energizing camera-work happens when I’m shooting because it has a personal meaning or message. The photographs here represent many of my own favorites. If you are interested in a purchase, prints can be made of most of these images.

Background

Spending my early years in the backwoods of Aitkin, Minnesota, my exposure to the arts was limited. But artistic expression always finds a way out. For me it was landing a job with an advertising agency in Minneapolis. This gave me an opportunity to learn about design, techniques, and production. Moving into an ownership of a small design shop in Brainerd taught me the basics of “the arts as a business.” That’s also when purchasing a professional camera became a necessity, as the availability of pro-shooters was minimal in Northern Minnesota.

I am blessed to have been able to chase my artistic muses on a professional basis. But somehow, all along, I’ve had a desire to learn to paint with oils. However, this always took a back seat to family and business. Now, having the luxury of being able to pick and choose my client work as a book publisher, I am allowing time to develop this fascination with painting and fine-art photography.

I’d enjoy hearing from you if you are interested in making a purchase, have any questions, or would simply like to have a discussion about the art.
